STEPS TO FILE ITR

Step 1: Gather Required Documents

Before you begin filing your ITR, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  • PAN (Permanent Account Number)
  • Form 16: Provided by your employer summarizing your income, taxes deducted, etc.
  • Form 26AS: This document shows details of tax deducted at source (TDS) on your income.
  • Bank Statements: Especially if you have interest income from savings accounts or fixed deposits.
  • Investment Proofs: Such as receipts for LIC, PPF, NSC, etc.
  • Details of Other Income: If applicable (rental income, capital gains, etc.).
  • Aadhaar Card: Required for verification.
  • Bank Account Details: For receiving any tax refunds.

Step 2: Choose the Correct ITR Form

The form you need to file depends on your sources of income. Common forms include:

  • ITR-1 : For salaried individuals, one house property, and income from other sources.
  • ITR-2: For individuals and HUFs not having income from profits and gains of business or profession.
  • ITR-3: For individuals and HUFs having income from profits and gains of business or profession.

Choose the form that applies to your income sources.

Step 3: File Online or Offline

Most individuals today file their ITR online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal (https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in).

Filing Online:

  1. Register: If you are filing for the first time, register on the e-filing portal.
  2. Login: Use your PAN as user ID and set up your account.
  3. Download the ITR Form: Download the applicable form and fill it offline.
  4. Upload: Upload the filled-in XML file on the portal.
  5. Verification: Verify your return using Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking, or sending a signed physical copy (if applicable).

Filing Offline:

  1. Download: Download the ITR form from the e-filing portal.
  2. Fill: Fill the form offline and generate XML.
  3. Visit: Visit the nearest Income Tax Office or ASK Centre and submit the form.
  4. Acknowledge: Receive an acknowledgement on submission.

Step 4: Verification

After filing your return online, verify it within 30 days of filing. You can verify through:

  • Aadhaar OTP: Instant verification using Aadhaar OTP.
  • Net Banking: Login to your bank’s net banking for verification.
  • Sending Signed Copy: Print ITR-V, sign it, and send it to CPC Bangalore within 30 days.

Step 5: Tracking

Track the status of your filed ITR using the acknowledgment number. You will receive an intimation once it’s processed by the Income Tax Department.

DUE DATE

  • Deadline: File your ITR before the due date (July 31 for most individuals).
